Crittenton to Cook for the Community

WHEELING - They have endured lives of abuse and neglect, and now the young girls residing at Crittenton Services, Inc. will look beyond themselves, and work to serve the needs of others as they prepare a hearty meal for the less fortunate.

Girls ages 12-18 who make up the Residential Treatment Program at Crittenton Services will be stirring up a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup, and creating Valentine's Day cupcakes for those individuals who utilize the Winter Freeze Shelter. The young ladies are also making Valentine's Day cards to those staying at the shelter to go along with the dinner. The shelter is located in the Hazel-Atlas Building, 87 15th St., in East Wheeling. Warm beds are made available for adults to sleep on between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. during bitter cold weather.

The shelter is operated by John Moses, CEO of Youth Services Systems, who strives to make the homeless feel more like guests by offering them a comfortable home-like atmosphere where dinner is served nightly. Representatives of both Crittenton and YSS thought it would be an excellent opportunity for the teens of Crittenton to learn about the struggles the homeless face during winter weather months, and to help by making a hot meal for those who frequent the Winter Freeze Shelter. The girls will start cooking at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13 for the meal slated to be served the following day.

"It's an opportunity for the girls to give back to a community that continues to give so much," said Tracee Chambers, vice president of Crittenton Residential Treatment Program. "It is a great reflection of what we are doing at Crittenton, teaching the girls about compassion and social responsibility."

Chambers said that throughout the year Crittenton is fortunate enough to receive loyal support from private donors, local organizations, churches, colleges, and other civic oriented groups who donate everything from baby clothes and children's needs, to making monetary contributions - all to help a population of girls who have suffered sexual, mental, verbal, and physical abuse. Some of these young women are pregnant or parenting while others are not, yet they all receive the quality behavioral health treatment they deserve through Crittenton's gender-responsive programming.
