Oglebay and the Alpha, along with several other restaurants, will compete in a soup cook-off as a new component of this year’s event, which offers a wide variety of salads, soups breads and desserts. The luncheon benefits the Junior Board, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping the girls of Crittenton Services’ Residential Program achieve self-sufficiency.

A popular annual lunchtime event that offers a variety of soups and salads from professional chefs and volunteers is moving to downtown Wheeling and adding a competition. Crittenton Services’ Junior Board will present its annual Soup and Salad Event on October 14 at the Health Plan Pavilion in WesBanco Arena.  The luncheon will begin promptly at noon, and tickets for the all-you-can eat buffet can be purchased at the door for $10. Carry-out orders may also be purchased for an additional $10. For groups of ten or more, reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (304) 242-7060 ext. 133.

“The selection of salads are always amazing,” according to Junior Board member Sharon Bohn. “We offer everything from traditional tossed, potato, macaroni and pasta salads to broccoli Waldorf, three-bean, Chinese, strawberry spinach and the ever-popular pretzel salad. We will have more than a dozen and a half varieties of salads from which to choose. Most people sample a variety.”

Salads are contributed by volunteers from the Crittenton Services staff and the Junior Board, along with area restaurants such as Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, Jebbia’s Market, TJ’s Sports Garden Restaurant, Undo’s and Young’s Cafeteria.

This year’s luncheon will be enhanced by a soup cook-off featuring chefs from several of the area’s top restaurants, including Generations, the Metropolitan Citi Grill, Oglebay Resort and Conference Center, River City Ale Works and Ye Olde Alpha. Guests may sample each or any of the soups and vote for their favorites.

Door prizes and theme basket raffles will also be offered. Other area businesses supporting the event include the Candy Bouquet, DeFelice Pizza, Greco’s, Kroger, Suzy-Q Bakery and Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers.

Proceeds from the luncheon benefit the Junior Board, which provides monthly activities for the girls of Crittenton Services’ Residential Program, with its facility located in Elm Grove. The gender-specific behavioral health treatment program is committed to transforming the lives of young women – one child, one girl and one family at a time.

The Crittenton Junior Board offers flexible volunteering for today’s women, providing opportunities to help adolescent girls, who are facing challenging times, achieve self-sufficiency.  Information about membership and joining the Junior Board will be available at the luncheon.

Seating is limited, so the event’s organizers encourage attendees with large parties to make reservations in advance, to assure seating will be together.
